How to Sow Wildflowers

This guide shows you how to sow wildflower seed onto prepared ground in September and give it the best chance of establishing well. You'll learn how to choose the right mix, prepare the soil and sow it correctly. Bare ground over winter is normal, patience through to spring is part of the process.

Dan's Tip

Put most of your effort into preparation, not extra seed. Wildflower seed still needs contact with soil, moisture and light to succeed.

Step by step guide

1

Decide What You Want

Fast colour needs an annual mix, a lasting meadow needs a perennial one. Know which you want before you buy your seed, so you are not disappointed later.

2

Check Your Site is Ready

Check light, drainage, weeds and weather. Heavy clay that stays wet through winter is better sown in spring instead of now.
