How to Plant Spring Bulbs

This guide shows you how to get spring-flowering bulbs into the ground and give them the best chance of a strong show next year. You'll learn how to choose healthy bulbs, plant them at the right depth and look after them while they settle in. The hands-on work is quick. After that, the weather and a bit of patience do most of the work.

Dan's Tip

Don't overthink the depth. As a rule of thumb, plant each bulb about three times as deep as the bulb is tall. If you're ever unsure, it's better to go a little deeper than too shallow.

Step by step guide

1

Choose Healthy Bulbs

Pick bulbs that feel firm and heavy for their size, with no soft spots, mould or damage. Avoid anything that feels papery, shrivelled or lightweight, as this usually means the bulb has dried out or started to rot. Firm, plump bulbs give you the best chance of a strong flower next spring.

2

Choose the Right Spot

Look for a sunny or lightly shaded spot with soil that drains well. Most spring bulbs rot in soil that stays wet over winter, so avoid low areas where water tends to collect. A border, bed or large pot all work well, as long as drainage is good.
